5 Reasons You Should Switch To Keyless Locks On Your Home

More and more we are starting to see keyless entry on homes. As the products improve in both quality and style while the prices start to come down we are going to see far more people jumping on board. There are still plenty of people who aren’t convinced to switch over so here’s a couple reasons for you.

A large reason a lot of people switch over is simply for ease of entry. With a keyless system you aren’t having to reach for keys and get it in the lock. This normally isn’t a huge issue but if you’ve ever had your hands full and tried to get in a lock then you’ve experienced this frustration. Keyless allows you to either touch a fob, type a code, or press a button on a remote control. There is no fumbling around.

Key restriction is also an issue. Conventional keys can be duplicated so if you rent your place or have a vacation home that others also use you may want to know that no one can copy your keys but you. If it is a keypad lock that you decided on then you are the one that creates the codes for it. If you don’t feel comfortable with someone having a code you simply delete it and add a new one. The same goes for a keyfob type lock. The person with the key can’t simply take it to a locksmith or store and get a copy made. You are the only one capable of doing this for them.

Key restriction also leads us to duplication. The other side of the coin here is that you can make as many keys as you want without having to call a locksmith. Everything is in your hands to take care of with ease so if you have someone staying at your place for a week you can simply give them a temporary code to get in. No more leaving a key outside where it can be found by someone. 

No longer do you have to sacrifice style. It used to be that if you wanted a keypad or keyless entry that you had a bulky looking lock on your front door but with technology shrinking things that’s no longer the issue. In recent years the cost has also come down allowing manufacturers to add more styles and colors to their lineups. It is not tough to match a keyless lock to the rest of the house these days.

The final and most important point here is cost savings. At the initial purchase you will pay more for a keyless system but over the long run you will save your money by not having to make duplicate keys or having to replace the lock if the keys get lost altogether. This is especially true for those of you with a vacation property that you are continually having different people at.

Mailboxes For Fun

When most people think about mailboxes, they think about very mundane steel containers which serve no other purpose than that of … well … a mailbox. Mailboxes however, actually come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes with many different functions often included in the design of the individual who purchased or built the mailbox.

While in fact most of the mailboxes people purchase are simple steel boxes in the classical mailbox half-oval shape, some mail boxes are very ornate indeed. There is no law that says mailboxes cannot be something more, even much more than just a plain and ordinary mail box. Some of the more ornate versions of mailboxes incorporate such unique features as bird baths, bird houses, sporting events, buildings etc.

One of the most unique mailboxes includes a completely automated system. It notifies the mail-recipient when mail arrives to the mail box and delivers the post, via a system of automated belts and drives, directly to the kitchen table of the mailbox holder. While mailboxes such as these are extremely rare, and usually only found in home made mailboxes, they are not alone in their quest to be something more than just a mailbox.

Some of the more common garden-variety mailboxes include homes for animals. It is not at all uncommon in rural areas to find mail boxes that have been made up and serve other purposes. The birdhouse is the most commonly used variation it seems. Often the mailboxes are simply set on longer poles, but sometimes the owners of the mailboxes go to great length to make their mailboxes stand out. One such birdhouse and mailbox incorporates the local fauna, a bird feeder and also the mailbox all together to form a most-conducive atmosphere for the local wildlife while still providing easy access for the mail delivery.

Another common theme of mailboxes is buildings. Whether the mailbox is shaped like a home, a barn or any other reminder that the mailbox owner enjoys, these are pleasing not only aesthetically, but maintain their primary functions as mailboxes. Perhaps the most common building mailbox is a barn. However, there is no limit to what can be created with a simple mailbox if the owner has a little imagination and ability.

There are actually a few coffee-table books and other interesting collections of memorabilia regarding mailboxes. The designs, the aesthetic appearances and the use of mailboxes need not be limited to the simple and plain mailbox anymore.

I’ve heard you can save money on real estate transfer taxes, etc, but cannot find any information on the associated savings with selling your home to family members. I will be selling it at FMV.

There isn’t any advantage. The IRS says the sale must be an “arms length transaction”, or they will tax it like it was an arms length transaction. That means they will treat it as a sale to a complete stranger regardless of who you sell to or what you agree upon.

The only way you could get a tax advantage would be to lie about the actual sales price and accept money not recorded at the time of the sale. That is illegal and you would get hefty fines from the IRS.

Why Buy Pre-drawn Home Plans Vs. Custom Home Plans? – Part I

When a family begins the process of building a new home, there are many different aspects that need to be considered including: where to build, what size home to build, what features to include, what items are the most important to have in the home, what costs should be included in the cost estimate, what are the design/build timeframes, who will build the home, and a host of other issues.

After these initial questions have been successfully answered, the next item that must be addressed is that of home plans. There are two basic types of home plans that can be purchased, “custom” or pre-drawn, with each having distinct advantages and disadvantages.

Custom home plans:

Custom home plans are just as the name implies. The home plans are custom developed to meet your specific needs. The plans are normally drawn by a local building design professional in a geographic location close to where the 1.) owners live, or 2.) home will be built. The process is, normally, much more involved and time-consuming since the owner’s specific requests will need to be integrated into the overall design of the home. Many times these type “special” requests can present significant challenges to the designer of the home, which as a result, may take additional time to resolve.

Since the home is being custom designed, specifically to meet the needs of that one family, the costs associated with the development of the custom home plans tend to be significantly larger than those for a similar set of stock home plans. However, in some cases, the custom home plans may be the only viable option based on the client’s needs, home location, special construction considerations, etc.

Advantages:

- Home Owner can get exactly what they want in home plan

- Special needs can be addressed in the design (i.e. extra large garage for boat, larger than normal master bath, handicapped access, etc.)

Disadvantages:

- Normally more costly than stock home plans

- Normally involves longer, more arduous process to develop

- Normally more time-consuming to develop (i.e. many meetings necessary with designer over several month period)

Can someone advise on the use of filtration of home water system ? I am confused !?

Different marketing brands tell you different things. Lately PUB replied in ST that there is no need to have home water filtration as the water is deemed clean and safe. Amway, Diamond are just 2 brands among others that suggest different. HELP!

My father owned a commercial plating company and someone wanted him to sell water filters. He borrowed the demo model and tested the water before and after he used it. He said the water was no better than the water from the tap. If you have city water (and not well water), and your pipes are in good condition, you shouldn’t need a water purifier. If you really want one, use a sorce like consumer reports to see which ones are “the best.” Everyone is going to claim to be wonderful in their ads. I hope that helps some.

How to Start Recording Music at Home

It’s perfectly possible to make very high quality recordings at home with today’s computer technology. However, you will need to spend a fair bit of money on software, and hardware (such as high quality microphones and soundcards) in order to achieve this. BUT DON’T WORRY! It is entirely possible to make recordings at home that are very respectable in quality whilst spending only a relatively small amount of money! Even better news…it’s all pretty easy to do!

I like to think of my home recording set-up like an artist’s sketchbook. It’s somewhere to play around with my ideas, record a few vocal takes, put down a basic bass line, some simple drums and maybe a guitar track behind it. It’s then that the magic really starts. On pretty much all music software you can just copy and paste individual parts (or whole sections) around, just like you would do in a word processor. This makes it really easy to swap verses around, try a new drum beat on a different section…anything you can think of really.

Home studio software usually has a good selection of instruments built in, so you can add piano, strings, brass, synth and many more sounds to your songs. If you’re an accomplished keyboard player you can play all these different parts in via a (music) keyboard. If not, you can just play the notes in on screen (and you can change them really easily if you play a wrong note).

Like I said, if you want to do this all at a really high (studio quality) level, then you’ll need to think about investing some serious cash. But most software and hardware manufacturers have realised that there are loads of people like you and me out there, and have produced some really good ‘Entry Level’ cut down versions of their studio quality kit.

What you’ll need to get started.

At the most basic level, all you need for recording at home is a microphone, a sound card and a computer running some recording software. Lets look at the hardware first.

Microphones

You can use the same microphone you would use for live shows for basic home recording (the Shure SM58 is a tried and tested classic), but you’ll want to think about getting a studio quality condenser microphone if you want to record higher quality vocals.

Pop Shield

Pop shields are an inexpensive device that attaches to the mic stand, and stops loud blowing and popping noises from reaching the microphone. Singers make these noises mostly when singing ‘P’ and ‘B’ type sounds. You can make basic pop shield by stretching a pair of tights over a wire coat hanger! It won’t be as good as a professional one, but it will do the job pretty well!

Sound Cards

The majority of sound cards that come with computers are not designed for use with music programs. If you try to use them for recording music the quality will be much lower and you will experience large delays which will make recording impossible. If you want to do home recording then you will need a soundcard that has been designed for this purpose.

There are several different types:-

Internal Cards – If you have a PC that has a spare internal card slot, then you can get a relatively inexpensive sound card that can be used for home music production. If you know what you are doing you can fit them yourself, but if you’re in any doubt then please (for your own safety) get someone who knows what they are doing to fit it.

USB / FIREWIRE – there are some great sound cards that attach via USB / FIREWIRE. They usually cost a little bit more, but are really easy to transfer between computers if you use more than one.

Another thing to consider when you are buying a sound card is whether or not it will directly accept the signal from your microphone. It will almost certainly tell you this on the package / website where you buy it from, and may say something like ‘Mic Preamp’. If it doesn’t then you will need to connect it via your mixing desk.

Now lets talk about the software

On the most basic level, the software works by recording each channel of music (e.g. Vocals, Guitar, Drums etc). You can then alter the volumes of each of the different tracks, just like you would do live on a mixing desk. Each separate channel can be chopped up and moved around (just like you can copy and paste text in a word processor). This is what makes recording on computers much more powerful than old style tape recordings. Finaly you can add effects like compression, reverb and delay to individual tracks (or to the whole mix) then your track is about finished.

I’ve always used software from a company called Steinberg. It’s very powerful software and it’s pretty easy to understand. Steinberg produces a very high quality studio program called Cubase 4. They also produce a cut down version for the home user called Cubase 4 Essential, and another piece of software aimed at total beginners called Sequel. There are several other companies that also make great quality, affordable software for home recording.

Once you’ve got the basics set up, you just need to get recording, and try out new things. Make sure you read the user manual to get full benefit out of these powerful pieces of software.
